OVERVIEW

A high-density commercial and residential development in Northeast Singapore upgraded its car park lighting system to reduce energy costs, minimise maintenance, and improve efficiency across its 24-hour operations.

At a Glance

  • Up to 80% reduction in electricity costs*
  • Replaced 2×T5 fluorescent fittings with 1,200 units of 36W LED weatherproof fittings
  • Implemented smart lighting control system with cloud-based monitoring
  • Features include motion sensors, smart zoning, daylight sensors, and automated dimming
  • Enables centralised control and real-time performance tracking

The Challenge: Inefficient and High Maintenance Lighting

The car park previously relied on traditional lighting for car parks using 2×T5 fluorescent tubes, with lights operating at full brightness at all times regardless of occupancy. This setup resulted in high power consumption, exceeding 630,000 kWh per year, and a high failure rate as the T5 tubes frequently burned out.

As a result, the facility incurred ongoing maintenance costs of over $5,700 annually for replacements and repairs. In addition, the system was highly inefficient, with significant energy wastage due to lighting remaining fully on even when areas were empty.

The Solution: Smart Car Park Lighting System

Due to the high failure rate and power consumption of the existing system, a smarter carpark lighting solution was proposed, upgrading to LED lighting with smart controls to achieve longer lifespan, lower energy usage, and reduced maintenance.

A cloud based platform allows centralised monitoring and control of the lighting system. In addition, real time fault alerts enable faster maintenance by notifying facility managers immediately when issues occur.

Key Highlights

Smart Zoning and Automation

The carpark smart lighting system is designed to provide light only when and where it is needed.

This ensures optimal lighting for car parks while eliminating unnecessary energy usage.

Active Motion Sensor Detection

Motion-Following Illumination
Sensors detect vehicles or pedestrians and activate lighting zones progressively

Adaptive Dimming
Lights automatically dim when areas are unoccupied

Time-Based Lighting Control

  • Peak Hours (12pm–3pm, 6pm–9pm): 80%–100% brightness
  • Off-Peak Periods: Dim to 70% after inactivity
  • Late Night: Reduced further to 40%–50% brightness

Daylight Harvesting
Sensors adjust lighting levels near entrances based on natural light conditions

What Was Installed

We upgraded the outdated T5 tubes to a durable, smart-enabled LED lighting system, delivering both efficiency and intelligence:

Main Lights
1,200 sets of 36W LED Weatherproof Fittings with a lifespan of $50,000$ hours.

Smart control system
Cloud-connected gateways and controllers.

Sensor system
Motion detection and daylight sensors.
